DescriptionJames Patrick Morgan was born in London in 1943 and was raised in the South of England. He first joined the Merchant Navy in 1961 as a cadet and ascended through the ranks to Captain. He sailed extensively to Europe and Africa, which was served by Elder Dempster Lines, and throughout his career, he acquired an array of artifacts which provide a detailed collection of Elder Dempster shipping history. 
The collection includes personal correspondence, postcards, photographs, paintings, and prints, as well as an array of printed ephemera, such as magazines and menus. There is also silverware, glassware, and ceramics. It is a comprehensive visual collection representing the ships that were part of the Elder Dempster Line, detailing the development of the company.

This collection was received as part of the Elder Dempster Lines oral history project "Homeward Bound: A Liverpool-West Africa Heritage". More information about this project can be found at
AdminHistoryThe material in the collection was amassed by Captain James Morgan over the course of his life. It was Captain Morgan’s wish that the collection was passed on to Liverpool John Moore’s University, and was donated by his wife, Mrs. Joyce Morgan.
The material is now housed in archival quality storage boxes and was arranged and catalogued between March 2021 and May 2023 by Jenny Cooper, Kate Hudson, Rosie Nook, and Julie Cain.
