| AdminHistory | Joan Daphne Franks was born on 4 December 1929 in Sidcup, Chislehurst, Kent. Her father Cecil John Franks was a commercial clerk in New Eltham and her mother's maiden name was Helen Isles McInnes. Joan attended Chislehurst & Sidcup County Grammar School for Girls from 1938-1948, after which she attended I M Marsh College of Physical Education from 1948-1951. After qualifying as a teacher, Joan taught at the Torquay Girls Grammar School from 1951 until July 1954. Joan sailed then to Istanbul in September 1954 and taught at The English High School from 1954. Later, she taught at the Anstey College of Physical Education as a lecturer until 1969. It was here that she met the depositor's aunt, Barbara Rylands. Joan and Barbara left Anstey together and moved to be close to the Lake District. Joan then taught briefly in Crewe and then at Milnthorpe Secondary School, Cumbria, from 1972 onwards until she took an early retirement. Joan died on 13 July 1998 at St John's Hospice, Lancaster. |
