Shirley Valentine won Laurence Olivier awards for Best Actress and Best New Comedy. There have been numerous UK touring and international productions of Shirley Valentine, produced by Bill Kenwright, and including a production directed by Richard Olivier. In 1989, Shirley Valentine opened at the Booth Theatre on Broadway, directed by Simon Callow and starring Pauline Collins. This production won the Drama Desk Award, the Outer Critics Circle Award, a Theatre World Award and a Tony Award for Best Actress and Outstanding Broadway Debut. It was nominated for Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding New Play and New Director of a Play, and for a Tony Award for Best Play. Actors to also perform the role in the USA include Ellen Burstyn and Loretta Swit, who played Shirley on the US national tour.

The film of Shirley Valentine, which was commissioned by Paramount Pictures premiered in 1989, and was directed by Lewis Gilbert and produced by Lewis Gilbert & Willy Russell. The film starred Pauline Collins and its cast included Tom Conti, Alison Steadman, Bernard Hill, Joanna Lumley, George Costigan, Tracie Bennett, Julie McKenzie, Sylvia Sims, Anna Keaveney, Ken Sharrock, Gareth Jefferson, Gillian Kearney and Catharine Duncan. The screenplay was written by Willy Russell and was at number 1 at the box office in the UK for 5 weeks.

The film won BAFTA Awards for Best Actress and Best Screenplay, the Evening Standard Award for Best Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay and a British Comedy Award for Top Comedy Film. It was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Actress and Best Original Song, and Golden Globes for Best Picture, Best Actress and Best Original Song, and a Grammy for best original song.
