Material relating to the stage production and the television production of Our Day Out.
Our Day Out was commissioned by the BBC for the series Play For Today. It was first broadcast in December 1977 and broadcast again 6 weeks later in 1978. It was produced by David Rose, directed by Pedr James and featured a cast which included Alun Armstrong, Jean Heywood, Elizabeth Estensen, Lennox Greaves, Julie Jones, Stephen Caffrey and Jacqueline Lucas.
Material relating to the television production includes manuscripts, publicity & media material, and correspondence from 1977 – 1979.
Our Day Out was adapted for the stage as a musical production in 1983 for the Liverpool Everyman Theatre and Youth Theatre, directed by Bob Eaton & Kate Rowland, with musical direction by Chris Mellor and songs written by Willy Russell, Bob Eaton & Chris Mellor.
Bob Eaton became artistic director of the Belgrade Theatre, Coventry, and Our Day Out was rewritten for a production at the Belgrade in 1996, directed by Glen Walford. In 2009 Willy Russell again reworked the script for a production at the Royal Court Theatre, Liverpool, updating and altering the plot, cultural references, terminology and character names. This production was again directed by Bob Eaton, with Rachel Russell as assistant director.
Since its publication in 1984 (Methuen) Our Day Out has become part of the school syllabus for Key Stage 3, and been performed by countless schools, amateur theatre and youth theatre groups, although material from these productions does not feature in this series. New editions of the musical version of Our Day Out were produced by Methuen in 1987, 1993 and 2011. The play version of Our Day Out was published by Samuel French Ltd in 1985.
