John, Paul, George, Ringo...and Bert was commissioned by Alan Dossor for the Liverpool Everyman Theatre and presented in May 1974. It was directed by Alan Dossor and starred George Costigan, Antony Sher, Bernard Hill, Trevor Eve and Philip Joseph, featuring music and vocal performance by Barbara Dickson. The production transferred to the Lyric Theatre in the West End in August 1974, where it was produced by Robert Stigwood & Michael Codron and ran for a year. The production won the Evening Standard, Plays and Players and London Critics’ Awards for Best New Musical. A cast recording by the London production was released by RSO Records in 1974, featuring Barbara Dickson, Dave Mattacks, Kevin Peak, Pete Zorn, Joe Egan and Gerry Rafferty. Two national tours of the UK and a production of the piece in Germany were followed by its presentation at the Young Vic Theatre, London in 1983. A film of the work was commissioned in 1975 by the Robert Stigwood Organisation, but never produced. An American production of John, Paul, George, Ringo...and Bert featuring the original West End cast was due to be presented at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles, but was also never produced due to difficulties with acquiring legal permissions.
