AdminHistoryArt in Liverpool was founded in 2004 by Minako Jackson and Ian Jackson and as a simple listings site and collection of material from galleries and exhibitions. A blog shortly followed on from this for the 2004 Liverpool Biennial, and then turned into a monthly print magazine. Art in Liverpool also serves as a comprehensive directory of local artists and aims to promote and inform on the visual arts across the city.

In 2011, Art in Liverpool became part of Vale who are also responsible for the Liverpool Biennial. Since 2018, Art in Liverpool has led Independents Biennial, a fifteen week festival supporting local visual artists and spaces they inhabit, in partnership with Liverpool Biennial.
