DescriptionThis collection consists of the personal papers of Liverpool-based musician Andy Roberts. It includes: personal and professional correspondence; personal and professional documentation; handwritten musical notes, scores, and lyrics; printed sheet music and music notes; draft scripts from theatre, film, and television which Roberts was involved in with annotations; promotional ephemera such as advertising posters, leaflets, programmes, and tickets for gigs and theatre performances; a personal gift from Sir Ian McKellen to mark the first night performance of Bent at the Royal Court Theatre in 1979; photographs; original drawings; zines; audio demo recordings; and an oral history interview with Andy Roberts.

AdminHistoryAndy Roberts is a musician and composer born in London in 1946. He was a violinist as a child, and obtained a music scholarship to study at Felsted School between 1956-1964. He studied Law at the Uiversity of Liverpool between 1965-1968, where he met the poet Roger McGough to become the guitarist accompanying The Scafford, and later joined The Liverpool Scene, a poetry band which also included Adrian Henri, Mike Evans, Mike Hart, Percy Jones, and Brian Dodson.

In 1972, Roberts formed the folk-rock band Plainsong with Iain Matthews, the other band members being Dave Richards and Bob Ronga. Around this period, Roberts also notably performed with GRIMMS, and was the backing guitarist for Pink Floyd's The Wall tour in 1981. As a musician, Roberts has a large discography, and has played and recorded as both a solo artist and with many other artists such as Roy Harper, Hank Wangford, Billy Connolly, Spitting Image, the Albion Band, Maddie Prior, Cat Stevens, Kevin Ayers, Rolf Harris, the Bonzo Dog Band, Richard Thompson, Kirsty MacColl, Maggie Reilly, Dennis Locorriere, and Twiggy, amongst many others.

He wrote his first stage musical, Mind Your Head, in 1973, and his first television score in 1974. He became a Music Director for the Royal Court Theatre in London between 1979 and 1983. He has scored films for the BBC, Miramax, ABCTV in the United States, and Disney (Touchstone Films) in Hollywood, in addition to writing extensively for television drama and factual programmes. As of the 2010s, Andy continues to tour and appear as both a solo act and as a band member on the guitar, appearing with 3 Bonzos and a Piano, and partners Hank Wangford in No Hall Too Small. In 2012 he played a farewell European tour with Plainsong.
