| AdminHistory | International Times (IT) magazine was the first and longest lasting European underground newspaper. The newspaper ran from the mid-1960s to the mid-1980s. Editors included John "Hoppy" Hopkins, David Mairowitz, Roger Hutchinson, Peter Stansill, Barry Miles, Jim Haynes, Tom McGrath, Jack Moore, William "Bill" Levy, and Mick Farren.
Closely allied to The Beatles, who helped financially, the International Times covered everything from flying saucers to eastern mysticism, taking in contemporary music and literature. Contributors included William Burroughs, Alan Ginsberg, John Peel, Mal Dean and Jeff Nuttall. The iconic “IT Girl” logo appeared on the cover of each issue along with a striking graphic image. |
| CustodialHistory | The International Times collection came to LJMU Special Collections & Archives through three main deposits. The first and largest of which is the full run of the magazine, plus advertising material and other ephemera, in addition to the papers of Barry Miles, which was purchased in 2006. Following this, LJMU SCA made two additional purchases in 2009 for the papers of Mick Farren related to the International Times magazine, and in 2018 for Bill Levy's papers related to the International Times magazine. |
