DescriptionThis collection is a digital record of the Merseyside at War project which ran between 2014 and 2018 during the centenary anniversary of the First World War. Hosted by LJMU Special Collections & Archives and supported by the office of the Lord-Lieutenant of Merseyside, Merseyside at War was a project to collect, digitise, and disseminate stories, memories, and historical material from WW1 around the region. The project invited members of the public, as well as other archive services, to contribute material to be made available digitally and become part of a living research project. Although the website no longer exists, this digital collection remains as the legacy of the project. The digital collection includes: written and oral memories; photographs; postcards; newspaper clippings; periodicals, magazines, and other special publications; other records related to WW1; and records of the project's output including community commemorations of the First World War.

The project commemorated the men who fought overseas and the people on the home front whose lives were affected by the war; from the men working in Reserved Occupations on the docks and in the mines to the conscientious objectors and their religious and moral beliefs. The website also recorded the experiences of women during war who took on a diverse range of roles from working in factories to volunteering and raising money for local and national organisations including the Red Cross and the Women’s War Service Bureau not forgetting those engaged in the nursing and medical profession.
