TitleNotable Women: The Maureen Bell Collection

Extent139 Books
DescriptionCollection of books from Maureen Bell. The volumes contain multiple biographies of women, mostly Victorian, aimed at a female market, including some notable bindings. There are also some conduct and advice books, and books on social questions relating to women. The books feature (not always approvingly!) women in many roles: as queens, adventurers, writers, ‘actresses’ and ‘beauties’, religious figures, and pioneers. The books range from elaborately presented gift books and more serious historical works to cheaper popular texts. The recurrence of particular heroines (and ‘sinners’) across the decades is evidence of the formation of a popular historical canon of famous women, as well as changing attitudes to models of femininity and patterns of moral education.

AdminHistoryThe collection was gathered by Maureen Bell over several decades. Her academic research is in early modern book history, especially the writing, printing, publishing and reading of books by C17 women. These interests extended into collecting C19 books concerning women’s history and biography. The collective biographies became an identifiable genre in their own right, amongst a wider collection of women’s biography and history.
CustodialHistoryThe Notable Women collection was donated to LJMU by Maureen Bell in 2017, prompted by her friendship and collaboration with the late Nickianne Moody whose Femorabilia collection forms the core of a growing research resource on print culture by and for girls and women.
