DescriptionThe papers of Stafford Beer is a vast collection charting his cybernetics career, projects, and wide-ranging intellectual pursuits within: his personal papers; project records including Project Cybersyn in Chile; photographs; poetry and original texts, including children's books written for his children; paintings including self-portraits; models and other objects; gramophone records; and almost 2000 books and other reference material which reflect the development of his thinking.

AdminHistoryProfessor Anthony Stafford Beer was born on 25 September 1926 in London. He was a theorist and professor of the Manchester Business School, and founder of Management Cybernetics for which he is best known. Beer was employed by governments in over 20 countries and by a number of international agencies, held a number of academic posts and managerial positions and authored over 200 publications by the time of his death on 23 August 2002. He was also a published poet and exhibited painter. Projects he is well known for include the proto-internet Project Cybersyn in Chile, and his Syntegration events. He was appointed Honorary Professor of Organisational Transformation at the Liverpool Polytechnic, now Liverpool John Moores University, in 1989.
CustodialHistoryThe majority of this collection was purchased by LJMU Special Collections & Archives in 1991 from Stafford Beer directly. Since then, there have been several subsequent additional deposits of material related to Stafford Beer's life, including the books owned by Stafford Beer while he lived in Canada which were kindly deposited with us in 2023.

In particular, the book list has not yet been updated to add the 2023 deposit of books owned by Stafford Beer from his time spent living in Canada.
